The Art of turning down the Negativity-By Sonal Jain

One emotion that has no place in my life is negative emotions, and the mere thought of being surrounded by negativity curls my toes. Being pessimistic and having negative thoughts in life in an uncertain situation are bound to happen. It's a tendency to knock you down, make you feel skeptical about life, and bring pessimistic or undesirable outcomes at work and home.

Negative thoughts can have various reasons such as losing an opportunity, low self-confidence, failure in exams, tasks, or relationships. Things like losing a game or underperformance in life can also bring negative vibes. There is an endless list because not everything in life happens for the good. Such tough situations and phases need to touch you once in life to make you understand the importance of certain things.

How to turn the negativity down-

They say that to change the situation, and surroundings around you, constant efforts must be done. All that is being said in this blog does not challenge the importance and power of mental health professionals. It should be normalized to speak to professionals if required.

But in my life, I have always worked hard on myself and my emotions to knock the negativity down. Life is meant to be tough, and it becomes necessary for us to becomes tougher. So here are a few things that can help to turn the negativity down.

Accept what you are feeling-

The first rule of beating down negativity is to accept that something is wrong. Being in denial will not help you improve the situation. So, if you are sad, scared, uncertain, believe that is it exactly like that. Acceptance is the best medicine for any situation.

Express Gratitude-

It cannot be true that you are going through only bad times, right? In such a situation, start thinking about the best days or carefree days of your life and express your gratitude. Expressing gratitude gives you a sense of relief and hope better days are about to come.

Make yourself a priority-

Do not let the negativity win by surrendering or ignoring it. Take out time for yourself and practice self-care. It can be in the form of eating well, going for a walk, dancing your heart out, speaking to your close ones, or pampering yourself. Anything that can instantly make you happy, will be the gateway to find a solution.

Daily Journaling-

Self-journaling is a great way to help you way out. Keep a thought of the day diary where you can write how your day went by. It will help your true feelings come out on paper and make you feel lighter. Later, when you analyze the thoughts, replace the irrational feelings and thoughts with positive and happy ones.

Keep positive people around-

The company of people you chose is important to keep the negative emotions away. A social circle is chosen by you and it is an important decision to take. People who can motivate you and spread good vibes all around are meant to stay in your circle.

My perspective of Negativity and its impact on me-

  • There are only a few instances in my life where I am influenced by Negativity. According to me, the biggest enemy, who is responsible for negativity is OVER-THINKING. It is an emotion that is not under your control, but it is important to overcome this emotion at the earliest.

  • Over-thinking is a common emotion in humans. Excess of over-thinking and its effects can be visible variedly. For example- Over thinking lowers your self-confidence because you start comparing yourself to others. It can make you anxious even while performing your daily routine. Over-thinking can make you cautious about yourself at times.

  • Incidents of over-thinking were common in my life because of under-confidence. Comparisons took over my life for the longest time, and I had a sulking feeling.

How did I overcome this phase?

As I said, there is no scope for negativity in my life, but this emotion will surround you at least once in this lifetime. There was a time where I ridiculed myself for getting affected or influenced by this.

One mere thought in mind that I was ignoring the happy and positive side of my life for some stupid comparisons. Seeing myself in a negative space helped me change my mind. I strived to better my surroundings.

I stopped bothering myself with unnecessary information, and I got rid of relationships that did not add value to my life. I also became my biggest supporter to cheer up when in need. All these are little approaches that one must take to stay out of negativity.

Mostly they say you are what you consume. If I consume negative thoughts, conversations, videos, texts, it immediately puts me into that zone.

I have trained my mind saying- No Space For Negativity in My Life and that itself helps.
