Say hello to Royalty | Meet Udaipur through my lens – By Sonal Jain

Udaipur is famous for
Udaipur is like a mother who never fails to give a tight warm hug. I am glad to say that in this lifetime I had a chance to live in Udaipur for 3 years and re-visit it after 5 years and still, nothing had changed.

No amounts of words will be enough to describe what Udaipur really is and what it truly means to me. My love affair with Udaipur is so deep-rooted that it will take an equally mad lover of anything to understand this equation.

Udaipur is a place that still holds its essence as a royal arena and yet has transformed itself so gracefully and adapted well. Udaipur today has made a special place in everyone’s heart. It has become one true destination for vacations, destination weddings, shooting, and filming and so much more.

But for me, Udaipur is a lifestyle worthy place. A lifestyle that offers your peace, calmness, necessities, views, heritage, touristy vibes, and the water lakes worth living for. My story of pure love, admiration, and dreams for Udaipur takes off very silly but I did not know it would make a huge impact on me. So come, meet Udaipur through my lens.

Udaipur greets you with a big heart and open arms.

Ever since we were introduced to the history and every time I read about India’s history; Rajasthan’s history has always been my favorite. The history of the Royals and their lives have always fascinated me. I never had a dream of turning into a Disney princess, but I always dreamt about living in that era of royals in forts. Speaking of Udaipur, my dad accepted a job offer there in 2011.

We were in my hometown in Karnataka, things were going smoothly, and suddenly, we decided to shift to Udaipur.

Honestly speaking, I had no idea about Udaipur and its history because somewhere we have lacked mentioning our own warriors in the textbooks and all we have ever read about how India was invaded. I was nervous but excited about the change in life, but Udaipur welcomed us with a big warm hug.

People of Udaipur are warm and welcome you with open arms. This was the beginning of the journey to know to calm my curiousness about Udaipur.

How did my Love for Udaipur begin?

So, in the first year of starting to live in Udaipur, we tried to visit every historical place in the city and started learning more about it. All of us at home had a similar interest which is visiting forts and palaces and reading about them closely. The history of Mewar and Udaipur fascinated me to the core.

I said my love for Udaipur built up because of a very silly incident but an impactful one so, during the same year, a new historical Tv show on Sony started. Could you guess the name already? It was named Bharat ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap.

I was so delighted to watch such a beautifully portrayed show and happy that finally, this beautiful history could finally get its redemption. We never missed an episode and engrossed ourselves in it. I have always been a fan of historical shows and this took a special place in my heart. Currently, all the episodes are available on Youtube to watch.

My take on the History of Udaipur

Udaipur and the long history are very fascinating and must be preached more. None of the Mewar kings bowed down to invaders. They lost everything but kept their heads high. Maharana Pratap’s mention in history is superior to everyone else in his family because the main era of the Mughal invasion came during his reign, and he did everything to keep them off the motherland.

They lost their Kingdom Chittorgarh to Akbar because many Rajput kings decided to give up and side themselves with Akbar but Maharana Pratap always tried his best to bring his Rajputs together.

Maharana Pratap did not lose hope, he took 3 years to build a new kingdom, Udaipur. Post establishing Udaipur a bigger battle of Haldighati was fought. There was no clear conclusion of the battle, but later Maharana Pratap died of an Injury, a wound he got during that battle.

Ever since that happened, Akbar decided to not fight Udaipur/Mewar again. Akbar wept when he heard about Maharana Pratap’s death because he was a worthy opponent who could do anything for his motherland and he got a chance to come across a person like him. This part of the history gives me chills in my body because it is such a proud feeling that there was someone who lived only for his motherland while others started giving up.

Udaipur: Synonyms for Royal, kindness, and dreams

Apart from the history of royals, I feel even today people of Udaipur have that kind of royalty in them. Living in Udaipur for 3 years made me realize how proud the people of Udaipur are about their history and maintain the legacy in their lifestyle, culture, and behavior with outsiders. Their kindness is always upfront and they know how to comfort you well.

Speaking of dreams, I have had irrational dreams of being in the royal era, living in the forts, and leading that life. All fascinating dreams about royal life smothered me with love.

Udaipur: The City of lakes and bliss

Lakes of Udaipur is surely its most beautiful feature amongst everything else. If you have read a blog about me being a passionate admirer of water, you would know what living in Udaipur meant to me. Lake Pichola and Lake Fatehsagar were the most visited amongst the other lakes.

These lakes are in the city limits and a normal day in every Udaipurite’s life would be having a hot coffee in the evening at Fatehsagar or having brunch/dinner over the rooftop cafes or lakes side cafes on Lake Pichola.

The best part here is people of Udaipur find happiness or excitement in every little thing. There is a very exciting scenario in Fatehsagar lake during the rainy season. When the lake fills beyond capacity, water is transferred to subsequent lakes. This mere transfer is an eventful thing in Udaipur. Even the locals go and watch the mere flow of water and find it blissful.

My favorite places to visit in Udaipur-

Gangaur Ghat-

This is on Lake Pichola and this place has a very age-old and traditional and cultural value. A very famous and important festival Gangaur pooja or Gauri pooja is performed here.

Ambrai Ghat-

This is also on Lake Pichola but on the opposite side of Gangaur Ghat. Very often people visit this place in the evening to spend time beside the lake.

Bagore ki Haveli-

Just like the city palace, this place also has been converted into a museum and some really good displays of things have been kept. You can also see the lake Pichola from the top of this Haveli.

This has to be the calmest, joyous and lovely place to be. I have enjoyed every bit of this place to the core.

Udaipur has many tourist places to visit. The history is so rich that it will take you a long time to understand it. A Story of bravery, kindness, principles and so much more. Udaipur is a lot more than just a tourist place. Udaipur is an emotion I can always hold on to.

After I left Udaipur in 2014, I visited Udaipur in 2019 and this time as a tourist. It was also my first solo trip. I stayed there for 3 days and trust me I was overjoyed and overwhelmed once again. I experienced it in a different way and still, nothing changed. My love and admiration for this place grew evermore.  I wholeheartedly clicked pictures and kept them safe with me forever.
